Woodley Supports International Clinical Trials Day 20th May 2017

2017-05-16

International Clinical Trials Day is celebrated around the world each May to recognise the day that James Lind started what is often considered the first randomised clinical trial aboard a ship on May 20th 1747.

International Clinical Trials Day provides a focal point to raise awareness of the importance of research into improving healthcare and to highlight how partnerships between patients and practitioners are important to delivering high-quality, relevant research.

Lind's experiments in 1747 took place whilst he was a surgeon on HMS Salisbury. His trial consisted of 12 men, which he grouped into two. He gave one group a variety of dietary supplements including cider, oranges and lemons. The trial only lasted for six days but even within that short time frame there was a noticeable improvement in the one group, providing Lind with evidence of the link between citrus fruits and scurvy.
