QBC F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain: Features and BenefitsFurther information on the QBC F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain The QBC F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain uses fluorescence microscopy to improve clarity and contrast in malaria detection. Malaria parasites stained with F.A.S.T. stain stand out clearly against a dark background. The stain also provides unmatched speed, with thin blood film staining in just 1 minute, and minimising training requirements by utilising the same basic thin and thick smear preparation and review techniques as Giemsa stain. Designed for use under a fluorescent microscope or the QBC ParaLens Advance System. How Does It Work? The QBC F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain's propritary blend allows it to quickly permeate blood cells and bind to the nucleic acid of malaria parasites. When excited by blue light (~400-480 nm), stained parasites will fluoresce bright gold or orange, making them easy to detect. What do sample treated with F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain Look Like?
What kind of equipment is required?Samples treated with F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain are viewed at 1000x magnification with a fluorescence microscope, or fluorescence microscope attachment, with light and filter set capable of producing blue (~400-480 nm) excitation light. The QBC ParaLens Advance LED fluorescence microscope attachment is available with a 100x objective that is ideal for use with F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain. Who should use the F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain? All users performing, or interested in performing, malaria screening could potentially benefit from F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain. Users of Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) can analyse samples just as quickly with F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain, but with lower cost per test and the ability to quantify and speciate. Giemsa users, on the other hand, will appreciate its shorter staining times, as well as its improved contrast. How does it compare to the QBC Malaria Test? The QBC F.A.S.T. Malaria Stain has a lower cost per test than the QBC Malaria Test, and requires less training for experienced Giemsa users, since it uses the same processing and review techniques. On the other hand, the QBC Malaria Test provides easy sample collection and processing with fast preparation times. It also concentrates samples to simplify review and provide greater sensitivity than possible with conventional stains, particularly in cases of low parasitemia.
