The QBC Malaria Test represents a revolution in malaria and other blood borne parasite testing technology. This simple to use test contains all of its staining agents within a single tube, thereby making testing faster and easier.

Clinicians on the frontline of the malaria battle need fast results. The QBC Malaria Test leaves other malaria testing options in the dust in terms of preparation time and time required for review.

The test itself can be prepared in just 6-7 minutes, as it requires only to be filled with finger stick blood then centrifuged in the QBC Centrifuge for 5 minutes. The test can then be analysed under a fluorescent microscope (we recommend our QBC ParaLens Advance Fluorescent Microscope System).

Since the tube has been concentrated by centrifugation, the malaria parasites will be concentrated. Experienced technicians are capable of declaring a sample negative in just 3 minutes. At just 9-10 total minutes, the QBC Malaria Test can be performed in a third of the time of existing products.

These tubes are designed for use with the QBC Paralens Advance System

Using the QBC Malaria Tube with the QBC ParaLens Advance Fluorescence Microscopy System, identification of the following parasites is possible:

  • Malaria (P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale)
  • Babesiasis (B. microti, B. bigemina)
  • Typanosomiasis (T. brucei, T. gambiense, T. rhodensiense, Crithidia species, T. cruzi)
  • Filariasis (W. bancrofti, B. malayi, Loa loa, M. ozzardi, M. perstans, D. immitis)
  • Borrelia (B. duttonii, B. crocidurae)

Using additional conventional reagents with the QBC ParaLens Advance Fluorescence Microscopy System, it is possible to detect other parasites such as:

  • Eperythrozoon
  • Brucellosis (B. abortus, B. melitenis, B. orvis, B. susis, B. canis)
  • Trichomoniasis (Trichomonas Vaginalis)
  • Gonorrhoea (Neisseria Gonorrhoeae)
  • Pneumocystis (P. carinii)
  • Rabies
  • Mycobacteria (M. avium, M. intracellulare, M. tuberculosis, M. marium, M. kansasii, M. scrofulaceum)
  • Chlamydia trachomatis
  • Leptospirosis (Leptospira)
  • Visceral leishmaniasis (L. chagasi, L. donovani)
  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
  • Antinuclear antibodies (ANAs)

The QBC Tube

The float occupies the area midpoint between red cells and plasma. The amber layer surrounding the float is the buffy coat. Seen enlarged above, the three separate layers of the buffy coat are comprised of orange-yellow fluorescing platelets (top), green lympocytes/monocytes (middle) and yellow granulocytes (bottom). Below the granulocytes is the red blood cell layer (some overlap of RBC's and granulocytes occurs). Red cells containing Plasmodium parasites concentrate at the top of this layer and appear as multiple "pinpoints" of fluorescence. A negative specimen shows no fluorescing points in this area.

Easy To Use

The QBC Paralens is simple to use and requires no daily cleaning. It is also sturdy with no liquid handling or moving parts.

Method:
55-110 µL of blood is taken in a QBC™ Malaria tube coated with Acridine Orange, and centrifuged for 5 minutes. When viewed under a fluorescence microscope, the malaria parasites are seen concentrated, shining in the background of dark Red Blood Cells.

Sensitivity:
The high volume of blood, the concentration of the parasites by centrifugation and the fluorescent staining of parasites, make this the most sensitive test available for the diagnosis of malaria. Unparalleled sensitivity, of one parasite in 2 µL, is possible, compared with 40 - 50 parasites per µL for Thick Film. The loss of parasites can be up to 40% in conventional methods, whereas there is no loss of parasites in the processing of the QBC® tube. Up to 18% more positives are reported by QBC than the conventional Thick Film method.

Diagnosis:
All Plasmodium species are identified and quantified by the QBC Paralens system; Species differentiation is possible, enabling the Doctor to administer the right type of medication.

Paralens:
A minature fluorescent microscope, other than use for QBC Malaria™ test can be used for Fluorescent test for ACID FAST BACILLI (AFB) MYCOBACTERIUM TUBERCULOSIS by using AUROMINE – fluorescent staining technique.

The most sensitive test available due to:

  • The high volume of blood
  • The concentration of the parasites by centrifugation
  • The fluorescent staining of parasites

Unparalleled sensitivity of one parasite per 2 µL of blood is possible by the QBC method compared to 40 to 50 parasites per µL for a Thick film.

Species Diagnosis

Species differentiation is possible in the QBC Malaria Test, enabling the physician to administer the right type of medication. Because of the high sensitivity of the QBC test, it is possible to detect malaria parasites very early, avoiding a long recovery and loss of working days for the patient. A QBC test is highly specific and a negative result will enable the patient to avoid a multi-drug therapy.
